Review of the Fire and Emergency Services Act, 2005The Fire and Emergency Services Act, creating the South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission was passed in October 2005. Since that time, the Emergency Services sector has taken great leaps forward. We have created a better resourced, more strategically focused emergency services framework. The need for collaboration across the emergency services sector has become even more important since new 'whole of government' emergency management responsibilities were transferred to SAFECOM last year. When the Act was passed back in 2005 it specified that the Minister must cause the operation of the legislation to be reviewed after the 2-year anniversary of its commencement. On 1 October 2007 the review of the Fire and Emergency Services Act commenced. That review of the Act has now been completed by the reviewer Mr John Murray, a former Assistant Police Commissioner in SAPOL and Deputy Commissioner, Australian Federal Police. The reviewer has made 49 recommendations which will be analysed and responded to. Some require legislative change while others relate to changes in practice and administrative policy.
