South Australians can now receive a telephone warning message if they are within the immediate vicinity of an emergency. Following the devastating Victorian Black Saturday bushfires in 2009, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to develop Emergency Alert, a telephone-based emergency warning message system. The State Emergency Service (SES) and Country Fire Service (CFS) will this week honour the 17,000 dedicated volunteers who make up South Australia's emergency response capacity, as part of National Volunteer Week, May 10-16.
This year's National Volunteer Week theme, 'Volunteering: Now, more than ever' highlights that volunteering, now, more than ever, is important to Australian society and it is imperative that the South Australian community continue to recognise the efforts of emergency service volunteers.
