Learning and Development Action Plan approved

At its meeting in April, the SAFECOM Board approved the Learning and Development Action Plan 2010-2011.

The purpose of the Plan is to provide a unified, cross-sector approach to the provision of accessible and efficient training and learning opportunities to all members of the fire and emergency services sector.

Agency learning and development actions plans will be aligned to the Sector Action Plan.

The Plan provides direction for learning and development for all employees and volunteers, operational and non-operational, and clarifies the role for the SAFECOM Learning and Development Committee to monitor and support learning and development initiatives across the Sector.

One objective of the Plan is the development of sector wide strategies for increasing the use of technology to support learning and development.

An e-learning pilot is nearing completion with selected members in SES, CFS and MFS given the opportunity to access examples of e-learning developed by fire and emergency service trainers.

When the pilot concludes at the end of May, the information gained will be used to develop an e-learning strategy to meet the learning needs of the Sector.

SES and MFS are also to be congratulated for being awarded grants to improve the qualifications of trainers in their agencies.

SES received funding, through the Productivity Places Program, to provide Cert IV Training and Assessment to selected trainers, and MFS, in partnership with TAFE, received funds from the Australian Flexible Learning Framework to provide trainer-assessor training to regional trainers using e-learning.
