Bob's tireless work with SES rewarded

Long serving Eyre Peninsula State Emergency Service (SES) volunteer Robert Pycroft has been awarded an Emergency Services Medal (ESM) in the Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of his tireless voluntary work with the SES.

Bob was a member of the steering committee formed to create the Port Lincoln SES Unit, attending the first meeting in 1978.

Since then he has held positions as Deputy Controller, Rescue Officer and Training Officer for a period of 18 years, and was instrumental in training personnel in most of the units formed on the Eyre Peninsula during this time, particularly in the disciplines of light and heavy rescue and vertical rescue.

He became Unit Controller in Port Lincoln for two years until 2002 when he transferred to the Tumby Bay SES, where he held positions including Welfare Officer, Maintenance Officer, Training Officer and Cadet Officer. He is now the local Unit Manager and still holds the three other positions.

In addition to his dedicated work with the SES, Mr Pycroft is also involved in other community activities including being a member of several committees in Lipson, delivering meals for Tumby Bay Meals On Wheels and as a volunteer driver for the Red Cross.

Bob said it was an honour to receive the medal, and to have the recognition of a job well done.

"It's exciting and I didn't expect it," he said.

"It's great to have the respect of your peers, I like the comradeship (of being part of the SES), you feel like a family and you look out for each other. I'd like to thank my peers who nominated me for the award.

"I have always enjoyed being a volunteer, not just for the SES but various other organisations as well.

"You don't do this type of thing for personal reward. It's just the enjoyment of seeing people's appreciation for the effort you put forward to assist them in whatever way you can."
